(KMAland) – A beacon of hope has emerged for farmers and ranchers: a brand-new association designed to guide them through the complexities of hosting renewable energy projects on their precious land.
Jeff Risley, the passionate executive director of the Renewable Energy Farmers of America (REFA), shares his vision for the group and its ambitious goals. He says the aim is to empower landowners to navigate the complex world of billion-dollar developments with confidence, armed with the best information and insights from fellow farmers.
Empowering Landowners with Knowledge
REFA, a non-profit, is dedicated to helping and empowering farmer and rancher landowners who are either already hosting large renewable energy projects or are considering it. They’re committed to providing resources to help them navigate this complex process.
The mission is clear: provide unbiased information about the potential impacts of a project, both positive and negative, presented in a way that resonates with farmers and ranchers.
A Trusted Voice
According to Risley, REFA conducted research with about 100 farmers, and their biggest request was for a trusted, third-party, unbiased resource. They wanted someone that could bring them the truth, and present it in a way they understood, about how renewable energy projects would impact their land and their farming operation.
- A trusted, unbiased voice is a high priority for landowners.
- Farmers need information in terms they can understand.
- Understanding the true impact on their land is paramount.
Peer-to-Peer Networking
Farmers and ranchers also expressed the desire to connect with others who have experience with hosting these types of projects. REFA plans to facilitate peer-to-peer networking, creating a supportive community. They’re also offering professional services to answer questions about leases.
REFA will offer non-legal lease reviews and provide answers to tax questions. These leases can significantly impact income and business practices. All of this is to offer farmers and ranchers a collective voice, especially since they are grounded in private property rights. They want to ensure that farmers and ranchers have the opportunity to host these projects if they choose to.
Professional Support and Collective Voice
The organization also will offer professional services, including non-legal lease reviews and tax guidance. Navigating the financial implications of these projects can be daunting, and REFA aims to provide clarity.
- Non-legal lease reviews help clarify complex contracts.
- Tax guidance is crucial for managing new income streams.
- REFA provides a collective voice for farmers and ranchers.
Membership is open to all farmer and rancher landowners across the United States for an annual fee of $250. For more information, visit renewableenergyfarmers.org.
